The essential difference between 15 Open and the 16, 17 and 18 opens last week is all third place teams Friday had a chance to play their way back into gold after Day 1 pool play.

It takes a sting off the seeding situation, where there were three matches featuring PVB Top-20 clubs facing off Friday. For example, in 17 Open last week, Five Starz found itself in pool play with Skyline 17 Royal and Juggernaut 17 Black.

All three were nationally-ranked opponents. Five Starz finished in third place and was eliminated. Had the 17 Open been using this weekend’s 15 Open format, Five Starz would have played a challenge bracket of one-game playoffs to get back into contention.
