As the action on the club circuit for the boys enters its spring hiatus we have an update on the current bid picture in the 17 Open Division for June’s USAV Junior National Championships in Las Vegas. With just one remaining qualifier remaining on the other side of the high school season “spring break”, and the field having largely taken shape, let’s take a quick look back at how those who have accepted their bids, came to punch their tickets to the big dance this summer!
Far Western No Dinx Boys Bid Tournament
17 Open
- Bay to Bay 17-1
- KU’IKAHI 17R RoShamBo
The intimate three team field was topped by Mountain View VBC 17 Red who declined the option to claim the bid, and the invitations were accepted by the first and second runner-ups. Bay to Bay finished the pair of weekend pools 3-1, overcoming a 2-1 deficit to edge MVVC in a five set feature length thriller in round one.

Bay to Bay 17-1 dominated the field in Chicago to claim the Open Division’s top spots, but the four allocated bids for JNCs would trickle down outside of the top three, as a pair of top five finishers (C2 and Chicago Bounce), 11th-place 352 Elite, and 13th-place Borinquen Coqui would see their determination rewarded with summons to the summer’s national soiree.

Boys Southwest Classic
17 Open
- EXCEL 17 Red National
In what would become a weather-diminished field due to a rare Texas ice storm, a pair of the Lone Star State’s finest would tussle in the Gold Bracket finals, with EXCEL topping Houston VBA 17 Performance Red in straight sets to claim tournament gold, and the lone USAV Open Division bid allocated to the truncated field, upgrading their USA division bid, earned at Florida Fest the weekend before.

Dennis Lafata Gateway Boys Festival
17 Open
- Owls VBC 17-1
- Club Volebol Vaqueros Bayamon-17 Vaqueros
The “trickle-down” theme of the USAV qualification season continued at the Gateway Festival as Vaqueros placed third, accepting the twice spurned bid, while Owls VBC, through an extended chain of declinations and prior qualifications, cashed in their 11th-place finish for a ticket to Las Vegas.

Boys Atlantic Northeast Tournament (B.A.NE.)

- Academy of Long Island (ACAD) Boys 17 Red
- Old Dominion VBA 17 National

Semi-finalists Pace Bootlegger accepted the top bid allocated from the BANE 17 Open division; tournament champions Warren Six Pack, runner-ups Vanguard 17 Gold Kelso, and Yorktowne 17 Blue all declining to attend the duel in the desert coming in June. Another combination of prior bid acceptances, and waived options slid the second and third bids down to quarterfinal attendees Old Dominion, and Silver Bracket champions ACAD 17 Red earning the last Open division bid before the Boys East Coast Championships Memorial Day weekend, following the restart of boys club competition
