The Unsigned Showcase went off without any hitches Thursday ahead of the weekend’s JVA World Challenge.
Both sessions were led by Munciana 18 Samurai coach Mike Lingenfelter, while our recruiting seminar was hosted by Munciana recruiting director Patty Costlow. The coaching panel for that included former NCAA Player of the Year and new Indiana assistant Krista Vansant.
As for the action on the court, it was Kiera Booth gaining the most attention from our on-court coaches. The 6-1 Class of 2020 middle blocker from Revolution VBC in Pennsylvania impressed during every drill with her agility and attacking ability and was MVP of Session 2. One coach put it simply, saying “if we were picking a draft, she would be the one ready to play at the highest level right now.”
Booth also plays basketball and runs track. She said she was drawn to volleyball because of “the team aspect.” She said she really liked the constant reps of hitting and how everyone was cheering each other on during the showcase. Here’s the kicker with Booth. Though she’s been playing volleyball since fifth grade, this is actually her first season of club.
“I would like to go to a four-year school,” she said. “I’m open to whatever.”
As for our Session 1 MVP, it went to Anna Purichia. She’s a 5-11 freshman outside hitter from across the river in Louisville. She plays for Union and was the best all-around player in the first group. She has a nice arm swing and is one coach simply called her “a good player.”
We, unfortunately, missed Purichia after the session ended somehow. We looked around but couldn’t find her before getting back to the second session. Hopefully, we can track down Purichia and ask her a few questions during the tournament.
