Our first in-season College Top 64 finds Stanford still on top after the Cardinal opened the 2018 campaign yesterday with a workmanlike sweep at American in Washington, D.C. Sophomore OH Meghan McClure matched a career high with 13 kills for Stanford.
Texas and USC made moves up the rankings after impressive weekends. The Longhorns defeated ranked opponents Florida and Oregon at the VERT Challenge in Lincoln, Nebraska while USC made head coach Brent Crouch’s debut a successful one with home wins over ranked opponents Kentucky, Creighton and Northern Iowa at the Trojan Invitational.
Kentucky, which opened the season No. 6, tumbled 11 spots after going 0-3 in Los Angeles. The Wildcats, which lost three times during the entirety of the 2017 regular season, matched that total in one weekend with losses to USC, Creighton and Northern Iowa, the latter two in five sets.
Please note: PrepVolleyball.com’s College 64, which ranks 64 Division I teams, does not strictly determine the top 64 teams in the nation; rather, it is a ranking of the 64 teams we project will play in the NCAA tournament. This unique concept both recognizes the top teams in the nation, which hail largely from the “Power 5” conferences, as well as teams from those mid-major conference and leagues that often struggle for attention. Via this ranking, we will be paying attention to how every team in every conference does week-by-week.
