It’s tournament time! Eighteen conference tournaments will be conducted this week; 18 automatic bids to the NCAA Division I tournament through those conference tournament will be conferred. Will the teams we project to advance from their conferences to the tournament actually do it? It’s an exciting time to be sure.
This week’s rankings, for the first time this year, contain the exact same top 10 in the exact same order. Indeed, looking at the rankings as a whole, 29 teams occupy the same place this week as they did last week. Only three new teams made the College Top 64 and only one, Utah, entered as an At-Large. The rankings also feature a huge gain from Washington after its big week and huge drops from UCLA, Michigan and Rice after 0-2 weeks. The addition of Utah meant that we had to knock Princeton from the rankings even though the Tigers did nothing wrong. Sorry Princeton, it was you or Kennesaw State and we liked the Owls’ body of work just a little bit better.
Please note: PrepVolleyball.com’s College 64, which ranks 64 teams, does not strictly determine the top 64 teams in the nation; rather, it is a ranking of the 64 teams we project will play in the NCAA tournament. This unique concept both recognizes the top teams in the nation, which hail largely from the “Power 5” conferences, as well as teams from those mid-major conference and leagues that often struggle for attention. Via this ranking, we will be paying attention to how every team in every conference does week-by-week.
