After the first full week of conference play, one thing is clear: for the elite leagues like the Big Ten, Pac-12 and Big 12 and even more many other mid-major-type leagues, it’s going to be a meat grinder!
This week saw the list of Division I unbeatens sliced to three. In recognition of how hard it is to be undefeated in college volleyball despite playing less than half of the regular season, those three teams all rank among our top five. And while No. 1 BYU and No. 4 Pittsburgh may escape again this week and into the future, we’re not so sure about No. 3 Illinois, which will face the rigors of a Big Tem schedule (Nebraska this week, Wisconsin next week, Wisconsin AND Minnesota the week after) from here on out.
The rankings this week welcome 13 new teams, the highest being No. 34 Ohio State and No. 35 Missouri, which both got big wins over ranked teams. Several of the teams ousted from the rankings this time, like Kansas State and TCU, will undoubtedly fight their way back in before too long.
Please note: PrepVolleyball.com’s College 64, which ranks 64 teams, does not strictly determine the top 64 teams in the nation; rather, it is a ranking of the 64 teams we project will play in the NCAA tournament. This unique concept both recognizes the top teams in the nation, which hail largely from the “Power 5” conferences, as well as teams from those mid-major conference and leagues that often struggle for attention. Via this ranking, we will be paying attention to how every team in every conference does week-by-week.
