Much like his team’s run to the 2016 NCAA National Championship, the surprises continue for Coach John Dunning and Stanford after claiming the seventh title in school history last month in Columbus.
In unexpected news, the legendary coach announced his retirement. It comes weeks after Stanford, starting four freshmen, defeated Texas for the National Championship. It was Stanford’s first since 2005 and tied Penn State for the the most all time.
Part of the reason Dunning’s retirement comes as such a shock is because the Cardinal are set up nicely for a title defense with such a young group of players. As unexpected as it is, it’s equally graceful knowing that such an icon is leaving the coaching ranks exactly where he belongs – on top.
