JN’s: Top Seeds In Good Shape Day 1 Of 18 Open

Laguna Beach setter Payton Chang, left, and outside hitter Lindsey Ruddins talk during their match against MAVA. We were there to capture it all: Ruddins: "You are going to set me the ball, right?" Chang: "You know I'm going to Stanford? They don't let dumb people go there. Of course I'm setting you the ball."

Running down the opening day of 18 Open at Junior Nationals:

Pool 1 (in order of seeding)

TAV 3-0; Vision 1-2; Laguna Beach 3-0; Ohio Xtreme 1-1; MAVA 2-1; Forza1 North 0-2; Willowbrook 0-3; Triangle 0-2; Invasion 2-1

TAV 18 Black’s day was TAV like, as the No. 1 overall seed demolished its way through the first day by posting a 1.7442 points ratio. Ohio Xtreme 18s Teal should get credited a half-game in the standings just for being the only team to reach 20 points against TAV, dropping the second set 25-21.

Forza1 18 North Asics was the next-highest scorer, reaching 16 points in set one.

The big news out of the pool is Laguna Beach 18-1 sitting at 3-0. Laguna is without outside Alyse Ford, who is no longer part of the team. It didn’t stop Laguna from having an incredible start to pool play.

After sweeping Invasion 18 Black, Laguna had no issues in sweeping MAVA 18-Academy. MAVA is 2-1 after victories against Forza and Vision Gold 18-1, so that was no slouch of a win for Laguna.

A key contest was up next, as Laguna was 2-0 and Vision was 1-1. Vision desperately needed that victory to get to 2-1 and tie. However, Laguna rose up and won in three games, 25-20, 19-25, 15-13.
