Qualifier Update: May 12 – Big South Cancelled

On Tuesday, May 12th, The Big South Staff announced on the tournament website that the Big South Qualifier, originally scheduled for June 5-7, is now cancelled. That leaves just four qualifiers still remaining. The full message can be read here, but you can check out the main part below.

Good afternoon Big South Family,

Unfortunately, the time that we all have dreaded to accept has come. This is hard. Our staff, along with the city of Atlanta, have been working tirelessly to do everything in our power to try keep a small sliver of normalcy during these wavering times. We know how important volleyball is to all of you, and how important this tournament is to the players that attend. It is a community, a family, that could not have been built without the love that you all share for this amazing sport. To us, and all of you, this sport is more than just that.. It is our lives. It is the foundation of our families. It has been, and will continue to be, the gateway to life-long friendships. It is the stomping grounds for the creation of young player’s passions. For the last 30+ years, we’ve let that love, that community, be the driving force behind the success of this event. It was the fuel that took Big South out of the city of Tampa, and allowed it to thrive into what it has become in our second home of Atlanta.

We have heard the pleas to continue this event. We have read the positive posts from families and clubs choosing to see the light at the end of the tunnel. We have seen the begging posts from players asking us to do whatever we can to make this event happen for their final club season. Which is why it is with a heavy heart, and a lump in our throat, that we have to write this next line.

We regret to inform you that the Big South National Qualifier has officially been CANCELLED. The weekend of June 5-7 will be as lonely for us as it will for you. We will be missing the hustle and bustle of AM Wave, the whistles and cheers from hundreds of courts, and the late nights in the gym with our PM wave tie-breakers. Because of that, please make sure to keep an eye out on our social platforms that weekend for our #BigSouthAtHome Challenge.

But wait! There’s more! Big South has also announced that they are currently in the process of creating a ‘Big South Festival’, which you can read about below.

As much as it hurts us to share this sad news with you, there is a glimmer of hope at the end of this tunnel. We plan on running an event July 10-12th which will allow you, the players and staff, to determine if you want your season to be over or not. There will be no bids — So this won’t be the qualifier you know us to be. Our goal is to create a festival with great volleyball and a great atmosphere to continue the tradition that volleyball has given us all.

Information regarding refunds, hotel arrangements and more can be found on the Big South webpage. We also look forward to hearing more about the Big South Festival.
