Before Friday at 6 PM in Chicago, 23 teams had it in their minds that perhaps they could be the one to take down No. 1 Assumption of Kentucky at the ASICS Challenge. Teams plotted out where they would see the Rockets along the way, hoping they could extend their stretch in Gold to the final match and make it a grand take-down. But, no… Assumption plowed through the field in Chicago to go unbeaten, even in sets.
The ASICS Challenge made Assumption three-for-three in winning National-level high school tournaments as it also won the Louisville Invitational Volleyball Tournament and Durango. Its record remains a clean 28-0 with only five set losses total, and the Rockets have won 43-straight matches since its last loss.
That loss, the one that put a halt in Assumption’s streak, came on September 30, 2017, in the same tournament it won on September 29, 2018... against the team who beat them, Marist who went on to win the tournament. Last year in Chicago, Marist took down Assumption in a semifinal match and, in dramatic fashion, would face them again in this year’s final contest.
