High School Volleyball Begins Cautiously in Mississippi

The Mississippi Association of Independent Schools (MAIS), the state’s private school athletic organization, began fall sports competition on July 31st. The COVID-19 protocols called for great attention to detail, but those involved said it was worth it to get back on the court again.

On Thursday, reigning MAIS champion Jackson Academy held its first contest against Hillcrest Christian where it picked up its first 3-0 win of the 2020 season. It was Hillcrest’s third match. Mississippi’s public schools don’t begin matches until August 24th so Denson was scrambling to adjust her schedule and find someone to play.

JA coach Melissa Denson said the COVID-19 protocols were “more stressful than playing.” Still, she said that her players “were so happy” to be back competing this fall.
