HS: Foothill (CA) Welcomes Top-Ranked Playoff Test

Foothill’s Eliza Cannon controls the ball during Thursday’s action.

Last week, Foothill made its Top 100 National HS Rankings debut. Last night, in the start of the CIF Southern Section playoffs, the Knights showed they might stick around for another week. The same day Foothill climbed to No. 91 in the country in the latest rankings, the Knights dominated in every aspect and swept visiting Santa Margarita, 25-17, 25-16, 25-16, to advance to the quarterfinals next Wednesday. In that round, Foothill travels to national No. 11 Marymount, which survived a five-game scare over Lakewood, 24-26, 27-25, 13-25, 25-20, 15-7, to stay alive.

Thursday’s victory proved important for another reason, as it qualified Foothill (21-3), like it did all first-round winners, for the state playoffs. Which division the Knights are headed to depends on the result against Marymount. At worst, Foothill is guaranteed a spot in Division 1 for state. At best, Foothill upsets Marymount and clinches a spot in Open Division for state.
