Nashville Community Shows Support For Athlete Disqualified For Wearing Hijab

After freshman Valor College Prep volleyball player Najah Aqeel was disqualified from a match for wearing a hijab, the Valor College Prep and Nashville community rallied to support her and oppose the antiquated rule that disallowed her from participating in the game on Tuesday, September 15. According to the National Federation of State High School Association (NFHS) rules, "hair devices made of soft material and no more than three inches wide may be worn in the hair or on the head." However, this rule also mentions nothing of religious headwear or coverings and apparently requires state approval for those that do wear religious head coverings.
