PrepVolleyball.com's Top 100 National HS Rankings (Nov. 8)

Finally, a boom!

Flower Mound, ranked No. 88 last week, shocked then-No. 2 Byron Nelson earlier in the week to end Byron Nelson’s season. It was just the second loss of the season for the Bobcat, who also fell to Coppell earlier in the year. A gigantic upset of that nature creates shockwaves in the National Rankings, and what to do with Byron Nelson is the biggest question of the week?

Our friends at LoneStarVolleyball.com dropped Byron Nelson from No. 1 to No. 10 in Texas, and elevated Flower Mound from No. 11 to No. 9. That makes a ton of sense and it’s hard to really argue against that move. We handled it differently, and reserve the right to reconsider before the final rankings are set.

For now, the thought wasn’t to over-react, even though the thought process when it comes to the national rankings is to heavily weigh what happens in the postseason. The playoffs are what teams spend all season building towards and the results there should matter. At the same time, while Byron Nelson had to move down, just how far? And should Flower Mound climb all the way higher than Byron Nelson?

For now, the answer to the second question is no. Flower Mound rose 35 spots in this week’s rankings. Byron Nelson only fell 12 positions, to No. 15. We have Southlake Carroll, Waxahachie, Lovejoy and Prosper all ranked in the Top 25, and Byron Nelson is a combined 6-0 against the four, owning at least one victory over all of them. So for now, we kept Byron Nelson ahead of all of them, at No. 15.

We almost had another dilemma on our hands during Wednesday’s action. In Southern California state action, Long Beach Poly led then-No. 3 Mater Dei by a set and was up 18-15 in Game 2. Mater Dei beat Poly in the sectional quarterfinals, and ended up rallying for the four-set victory in the rematch. Therefore, Mater Dei moves up to No. 2 this week, but for a few moments it was another question to ponder should Mater Dei had lost.

As for other movement, five teams join the Top 100 this week. They are:

  • Eureka (Missouri)
  • Green Hope (North Carolina)
  • Lafayette (Missouri)
  • Marvin Ridge (North Carolina)
  • Wando (South Carolina)
