In the 2017 high school season, two teams within a 6.5-mile radius in Cincinnati, Ohio competed separately within the Greater Catholic Conference. Mother of Mercy and Mother McAuley did so while also knowing their teams and schools would merge into one the following year.
The Mother of Mercy Bobcats finished 22-4 and ended at No. 67 Nationally, and were coached by Denise Harvey. Justin Hilling coached the Mother McAuley Wolves who finished 4-14.
The logistics of how things would play out in combining two all-girls schools worried many of the students and staff on both sides. The wonder and fear began about which school the students would attend after the merge, who would coach and which players would make the new team, and, perhaps most acutely, people wondered if there be bias toward one set of athletes or another.
