Huntsville (Ala.) High setter Chelsea Wintzinger really had to earn the recognition she gets today as PrepVolleyball.com’s National Freshman of the Year. Because her teammate, Tanequa Whitman, was our national freshman a year ago, I really did not want to give it to another player from the same school. I like to spread it around. Moreover, despite being a freshman, Wintzinger was playing her second year of varsity ball, which is allowed in Alabama, giving her an advantage over freshman from other states who have to wait until their ninth grade years to prove themselves on the varsity level.
But, in the end, Wintzinger’s case for National Freshman of the Year was simply too strong. Despite other well-qualified nominees, she was the obvious choice.
