September is National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and one team is shining a golden light on the cause. In its first match of the month, Alabama’s Spanish Fort HS is wearing gold jerseys to represent the childhood cancer awareness ribbon color to honor a member of the program lost too early.

What began in late 2016 as pain in her hips and legs, Caroline Berry, a volleyball and basketball player at Spanish Fort, was diagnosed with Stage-4 Alveolar Rhabdomyosarcoma, an aggressive sarcoma that targets soft muscle and connective tissues. After two grueling years of battling cancer, Berry passed away on Thanksgiving morning, 2018.
